It's Christmas time and the McCallister family is preparing to head to Paris for vacation. Eight-year-old Kevin is the black sheep of the house, who is regularly picked on by his siblings and cousins, and his parents are annoyed by his antics. Kevin finds himself forced to sleep on the third floor of the house.
The soundtrack was released by Sony Classical Records on cassette on December 4, 1990, and on CD on May 27, 2015. John Candy was available for only one day to film his scenes, which took 23 hours to shoot. He was paid only $414, since he did the film as a favor to Hughes. In return, he was the only actor Hughes allowed to go off-script; according to Columbus, all his dialogue was improvised. On Christmas Day, Kevin is initially disappointed to find that his family is still gone, although Kate arrives home and they reconcile. I thought this movie was really good because it's funny and intense. Some sensitive people may not like it because there are people getting injuries from the traps the kids sets. Catherine O'Hara does a fine job as Kevin's overwrought, guilt-ridden mom, and Pesci and Stern have great chemistry and handle the physical comedy with aplomb. Another performance of note is John Candy's cameo as Polka Band Shuttle Chief Gus Polanski. Home Alone has a rather thin plot but makes up for it with all that cartoon-like violence. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern give wonderful performances and are the best thing in this movie.
Some people might not like the “uncanny valley” efforts to create realistic humans in CGI, but the movie itself is a faithful and entertaining adaptation of Charles Dickens’ story. Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Robin Wright also provide voices and motion capture for other roles in the film. It was praised for its quotable phrases, morals, traps, and main character. Hannah-Rose Yee of Stylist called the ending "very sweet" and praised the score from John Williams, calling it "fantastic".

It’s not quite as faithful to the source material, but the Muppets cast is terrific in the various smaller character roles. The highlight for this movie, however, is Michael Caine playing Scrooge, who is as funny as he is angry at times, and it’s a stand out performance from his huge career.
